This is no simple retelling of Homer's masterpiece about the Trojan War, but rather a supplement, a filling in, another story entirely. It is the story of Briseis, a young woman who was a queen in a city the great Greek hero Achilles sacks and destroys. Like Yazadi women under ISIS, she becomes a slave to the conquerors. In the Iliad Briseis is silent, despite being pivotal to the story: awarded to Achilles as a war prize, she is taken back by sulking King Agamemnon. Achilles withdraws for a sulk himself, refusing to fight for the Greeks and so jeopardizing the entire war effort.Briseis narrates her own life, illuminating and giving other women from the epic a voice. Forced to have sex with the same man who killed her husband and her brothers, she struggles with her fear and rage to find another meaning to her life and to hold on to the last vestiges of agency and identity.
